Ms. Rachel Miles
Faculty Representative
Rachel Miles is an associate professor and research impact coordinator at Virginia Tech University Libraries. She specializes in research analytics and evaluation and advocates for fair and responsible research evaluation. Her research focuses on the familiarity and attitudes towards bibliometrics, altmetrics, and researcher profile systems; and the perceptions of research assessment practices among academic librarians and faculty members at large research institutions in the US. She has been active in university governance since 2019 when she joined a Faculty Senate subcommittee to explore faculty perceptions of research assessment practices at the university. Subsequently, in 2022, she chaired a task force to draft a statement on the responsible use of research metrics, which was endorsed by the university in May 2024. Prior to being elected President, she served as the Operations Officer for the Faculty Senate for two years, served on the Policy and Procedures Committee for two years, and served on the Commission on Faculty Affairs for three years. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at Wichita State University in 2009 and her Master of Library Science from Emporia State University in 2015.
